Challenge

The department of Political Science at UC Berkeley is considered one of the top schools in the United States, as well as the entire world for the study of politics. Black Antelope designed, built, and has maintained the previous iteration of the website, but as the department’s needs have evolved, and the evolution of mobile devices has changed how the world uses the internet, it was time for a design update.

Solution

The new UCB Political Science website has a clean modern design, is easy to navigate, and is exceptionally mobile-friendly. Courses and events are automatically pulled in from central campus APIs, and then can be edited on the Drupal site if desired. In terms of accessibility, the site now conforms to ADA WCAG 2.0 requirements, making the site as accessible as possible to those with disabilities, and also adhering to university requirements.

Courses and Faculty Relationships

Drupal excels at structured content and relationships between things. One key example on the Polisci site is the relationship between courses and faculty. During import of courses, the system automatically creates relationships to the appropriate faculty members. The result is that when browsing courses, you can easily click through to see the faculty member’s page, and conversely on the faculty member’s page you can see all of their current and future courses.
