Challenge

Climate Interpreter serves as the virtual hub for The National Network for Ocean and Climate Change Interpretation (NNOCCI), uniting a diverse community from aquariums, zoos, national parks, marine sanctuaries, and science education centers committed to addressing climate change. This collaborative initiative, supported by entities such as The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the National Science Foundation (NSF), NNOCCI, and the Monterey Bay Aquarium, emphasizes knowledge exchange and community building.

Black Antelope was chosen by the Monterey Bay Aquarium to redesign and rebuild the website, with particular focus on improving the information architecture and introducing innovative social and community features. The overall goal of the project is to facilitate seamless information and resource sharing within this expansive community, fostering collaboration and learning among its members.

Solution

The redesigned Climate Interpreter website embodies a modern and streamlined aesthetic, marked by intuitive navigation and enhanced content organization for the site's wealth of content including community events, trainings, and resources. There is a pronounced emphasis on community engagement through features such as the members map and revamped organization partner profiles. One of the most-loved features of the site are its groups, which within them include discussions, a resource library, and member listings.

Key Highlights:

  • Optimized Information Architecture - We reorganized the site’s content and meticulously restructured the content layouts, including training modules, groups (leveraging Drupal’s Organic Groups), resources, and blog content to create an intuitive user experience.
  • Innovative Social Features - We designed and built new partner pages to highlight partner institutions, as well as a new members map to make it easier for Climate Interpreter members to connect and collaborate.
  • New Topic Pages - The incorporation of dedicated topic pages significantly improves accessibility to relevant information and resources. Members and visitors alike can now effortlessly navigate and discover content aligned with their area of work or interests.
  • Empowering Content Entry - We provided comprehensive training and consultations, imparting expertise on content entry and governance best practices within the Drupal CMS. This empowers users to contribute effectively while maintaining governance standards.
